What TRX is
Tron is a Layer 1 blockchain founded by Justin Sun, funded through a 2017 token sale. Its mainnet launched on May 31, 2018, and on June 25, 2018 it produced its own genesis block, moving TRX off Ethereum where it had started as a token.
Tron's defining role is carrying USDT. Tether began issuing on Tron in April 2019, and cheap, fast transfers made it the default for exchanges, remittances and everyday dollar payments in many countries. By September 2026 about $92.5 billion of the roughly $183.5 billion USDT in circulation lived on Tron, about half, compared with about $73.8 billion on Ethereum (DefiLlama). The network passed 400 million accounts on August 23, 2026.
How it works
TRX holders vote for Super Representatives. The top 27 produce blocks about every three seconds, and the top 127 candidates share voting rewards. Tron runs the TVM, which is compatible with Ethereum's EVM, and tokens use the TRC-20 standard.
Transactions consume two resources, Bandwidth and Energy. Staking TRX earns free allowances of both; without them, TRX is burned to pay. New issuance is 8 TRX per block to the producer plus 128 TRX per block to voters, so supply growth depends on how much is burned. Proposal 104 in August 2025 cut the Energy price from 210 to 100 sun, making USDT transfers cheaper. In Q1 2026 the network minted about 352 million TRX and burned about 282 million, a mildly inflationary quarter, leaving roughly 94.8 billion TRX in circulation.
Use cases
Stablecoin payments dominate: USDT transfers for remittances, exchange deposits and withdrawals, and dollar savings where banking is hard to reach. Tron also hosts DeFi lending and exchanges built around that stablecoin liquidity. MetaMask added native Tron support in Q1 2026, and the network earned about $82 million in fees that quarter.
Tradeoffs and criticism
Governance is concentrated: 27 block producers and a founder with outsized influence over the ecosystem. TRC-20 USDT is heavily used in illicit finance according to blockchain analytics firms such as TRM Labs, which has pushed Tron, Tether and TRM to form the T3 Financial Crime Unit, which has frozen more than $450 million. The SEC's securities case against Justin Sun and the Tron Foundation ended in a settlement on March 5, 2026, with an affiliate paying $10 million and the claims against Sun dismissed with prejudice.
