What Base is
Base is an Ethereum Layer 2 network incubated by Coinbase. A testnet opened in February 2023, a developer-only mainnet followed in July, and the network opened to the public on August 9, 2023. It grew quickly into the largest rollup by the value it secures: L2BEAT put that figure at about $16.2 billion in September 2026.
Base was built on the OP Stack and launched as the flagship chain of Optimism's Superchain. In February 2026 it announced a move to its own "unified stack". OP Labs says the code is still about 99% shared with the OP Stack, but Base now ships its own node and consensus clients, and its formal Superchain status after the move has not been publicly settled.
Unlike most major L2s, Base has no token. Jesse Pollak said in September 2025 that the team was beginning to explore one, and Coinbase leadership described it as having no definitive plans. As of September 2026 no Base token has been announced with a name, supply or date, so any "Base token" offered to you is not an official one.
How it works
Base is an optimistic rollup. A sequencer run by Coinbase orders transactions and produces blocks, and batches of transaction data are posted to Ethereum so anyone can rebuild the chain's state from L1. Fees are paid in ETH: a small L2 execution fee plus a share of the cost of publishing data to Ethereum.
The Azul hardfork on May 13, 2026 added a multiproof system that pairs a trusted execution environment with an SP1 zero-knowledge proof, which cut the standard withdrawal window from seven days to one. L2BEAT rates Base Stage 1: withdrawals are secured by proofs, but the provers are allowlisted, the sequencer is a single Coinbase-run cluster (if it ignores your transaction you can force it in through Ethereum after up to 12 hours), and the contracts can be upgraded instantly with no exit window.
Use cases
Base's 2026 focus is tokenized markets, stablecoin payments and developers. USDC is the dominant asset on the chain, and TerminalFeed's own premium credits settle in USDC on Base. On August 24, 2026 Coinbase launched tokenized stocks on Base (Apple, Nvidia, Meta and Alphabet among the first), available to users outside the US, with Alpaca as custodian. DeFi deposits reached a record of roughly $5.7 billion in September 2026, and consumer apps and payments round out the activity.
Tradeoffs and criticism
Base is only as decentralized as Coinbase lets it be today. One company runs the sequencer, the provers are allowlisted, and upgrades can land instantly. Sequencer bugs caused block production outages of 116 and 20 minutes on June 25 and 26, 2026, with no funds lost. Leaving the shared OP Stack codebase raised questions about Base's commitment to the Superchain, and in July 2026 Jesse Pollak publicly said he was "definitively wrong" about onchain social and stepped back from the Base app. The upside of the Coinbase connection is distribution: few chains have a regulated exchange feeding users and liquidity straight in.
